Thinking about going on a foreign tour, setting foot on new soil, exploring new things is a great idea. Though the idea of travelling to foreign countries, exploring new places meeting with new people and understanding a different culture can be exciting but it may also be dangerous. Here are a few tips that will make your journey safe and enjoyable:

  1. Get a valid passport and visa for your journey and keep them close to you always. Never give them to an unknown person.
  2. Gather as much as information possible about your place of visit beforehand. Know the security warnings of your destination and stick to them.
  3. Don’t take any valuables with you; take necessary items like clothing, shoes, shaving kit and others. Don’t travel with costly jewelry with you.
  4.  Abide by the local rules and customs of the country you are going to. Remember that you are a guest to their country so respect their customs and beliefs if you want to be respected in return.
  5. Don’t carry excess cash with you, use credit cards or debit cards and travelers checks for making payments.
  6. Be careful of pickpockets, they can easily spot you as a foreigner and target you. Always keep your wallet or purse close to you. It is better if you use a money belt.
  7. Don’t accept food or gift items from others, especially when travelling by a public transport system. Tourists are easy targets and every year many tourists get drugged and robbed off their entire luggage.
  8. Never leave your luggage unattended. Lock your suitcases and keep your entire valuables with you.
  9. Remember you are going to enjoy so don’t make silly mistakes that will ruin your holiday and you will have to remember it for all the wrong reasons. If at any time you feel something is wrong, be it on the streets or in your hotel getting out from there immediately is the best thing for you.
  10. If you are travelling to foreign countries it is wise to gather some information about that country’s law. Certain laws in foreign countries may seem a bit strange and you might end up in an awkward position due to it so it is wise brush up a bit on that country’s law.
  11. This may not be necessary but learning the local customs might also prove helpful to certain extent.
  12. If you are travelling with your pet then before you book hotels make sure that they allow them as several hotels don’t allow pets.
  13. Always be careful of your surroundings, remember you are in an unknown place where anyone hardly knows you and in case anything happens to you, chances are slim that anyone will help you. So rather than listening to your MP3 keep your eyes and ears open and listen to your surroundings.
  14. Get good travel insurance and make sure you that you know what type of coverage you enjoy. Question your travel insurance agent until all doubts have been cleared because in the end if something happens it is you who will end up in trouble, not the agent.
